I have never been a gym person. However, that has never stopped me from signing up for gym memberships or buying new gym gear with matching trainers! With great gusto, I will show up on Day 1 and work my heart out, only to buy a packet of Doritos on the way back and forget about that membership entirely! That’s pretty bad of me, I know. Other than the gym, my best form of exercise used to be going to Dubai Mall (the largest mall in the world you know!) … it’s a great workout for the body and the wallet! 😀
Please note that the above was written in past tense, which means I have managed to break out of the horrible habit now. Decided to sign up for group fitness classes (Zumba, Core Power etc) a few months ago, which worked out really well. Now I don’t know how I ever lived without it. Though I am far from being an expert at either of the above just yet, I thought it would be nice to share the few observations I have made thanks to this new lifestyle change over the last few months ….
‘You don’t need to exercise, you’re not overweight’: We really need to stop believing in that theory. Exercise is not just to lose weight, but rather to stay fit! So no matter what your weight is, a little exercise every day is recommended and I guarantee it will make you feel happier and lighter!
Workout in a group: This was the turning point for me. I discovered working out with a group of people was far more fun! It hardly gave me any time to look at the clock and dread over ‘how many more minutes left’ (as was often the case with me on the treadmill). It’s a lot more effective to work towards a common goal as part of a group.
Do not expect results overnight: Never go overboard with your workouts. Be realistic. Work on a plan that will make you reach your fitness goal gradually. That way, it will be much easier to maintain as well. I always feel the quicker you lose, the quicker you gain too! So take it easy and listen to your body … beauty takes time! 🙂
Your favourite pair of jeans never lie: If that jeans button is threatening to pop, then do not discard them just yet. Do not go shopping for a bigger size yet either. Instead keep those old favourite pair of jeans as your motivational goal, and vow to slip back in them and make them comfy again! 😉
Work on your eating habits: I have always been guilty of eating too much junk or sugary food. Lucky for me, I don’t put on weight that easily, but it doesn’t mean it’s not bad for me. So I have started eating healthy by adding plenty of greens and fruit to my diet and also increased my daily water intake. The best part is I have NOT deprived myself of the food I love and save that as a treat for the weekends. So balance is the key here.
Surround yourself with positive people: Getting fit is a journey full of ups and downs. Share your fitness goals with your close friends. That way, they’ll know when to buck you up when the going gets tough, as well as be able to keep you in check when the tough get going! 😀
These are the few things I have learnt so far and hope it has been somewhat useful to you. Would love to hear what works for you as well, so keep those comments coming 🙂
Until the next post ….

Oh yes, right on so many counts. Exercise is a must regardless for me anyway, sticks or no sticks, though walking the dog as far as I used to isn’t on the cards just now. Food habits needed changing anyway all those years ago, and before Hubby and I got married I attended an aerobics class with a friend from work which was absolutely brilliant fun (and only once did we stop for chips on the way home, but then we had walked the three miles there and back!) Then I put my back out, so that was a no-no, and the way I swim puts a strain on my neck and shoulders, so walking is definitely it! Clicking on the follow to keep in touch. You;ve got my kind of blog!

Yayy! Thanks for the follow 🙂 Walking alone can be a major factor in itself … so keep it up and take it easy as you don’t want your back to worsen .. so glad I discovered your blog too! 🙂

I hate when people say “you don’t need to exercise.” Usually, they do!

Do what motivates you and keeps you going back. I love working out, found the way that I get best results and hit it hard 4 days a week. I got my personal training license so I could train myself and I have gotten in even better shape.
Keep it up.

Loved the post!
So true – I found that concentrating on loosing weight made me so depressed – but then I stopped concentrating on loosing weight and rather concentrated on how amazing I felt after a workout – and I used that as my fuel, I’m in South Africa and our winter has just ended – I woke up for spring realizing that I didn’t pick up any weight , in fact I actually loosed weight, without noticing – just from enjoying running and not stuffing my face,
Fitness should be fun and loosing weight a bonus to that, not necessarily the main focus, ❤ ❤

Thank you! Completely agree with your comment … It becomes so much easier when we stop stressing over it …. Winter in South Africa sounds lovely … we are waiting for summer to end in Dubai now …

My Aunt is a teacher in Dubai – and she says it is so much different to run there than here – apparently very very hot!

Your Aunt must be very dedicated to her fitness regime if she still runs in the hot weather here … It can get pretty hot! But then winters are equally pleasant … Not long to go now before we can drive with the windows rolled down 🙂

I myself had the same problem. One day of exercise and forget all about it afterwards.
Now though I made myself a “exercise cup” and it makes it much easier for me to actually do something :p

Hey! Great blog post! It’s funny how daunting for many, myself included before I became an avid fitness nut, it is to really try to pick up living a healthier lifestyle is. Especially for those with a lot of misconceptions about the rigors of exercise and eating habits–if they’re not informed about how not-so-bad it can be the intimdation level can be off the charts!
Awesome advice for everyone to remember! I especially liked the bit about it not happening overnight. We all need to keep the process in mind! 🙂
As a new blogger that focuses on fitness as well as other things, I just wanted to drop by and say “Hello”, and I like your content! 🙂

Just browsing through your blog and came across this post. Great tips! I love the gym (it’s like my domain!), but also enjoy decent food portions, so it’s still kind of a struggle! I love spinning. Have you tried it? I’ve written a post on it, if you would like a read.

Thank you … I have never been spinning as am not sure my knees can take it, but funnily enough they showed a spinning class scene in a movie I was watching earlier and it looked like a disco … so much fun! Heading over to your link now to see if you can convince me to take up one more class 🙂 …
