Behind the scenes …

I was at a birthday party recently, you know the awkward kind where you don’t know anyone and are forced to have small talk with random people. Sound familiar? Anyways, when I mentioned I had my own blog, I got a lot of Ooo’s and Aaah’s but the one that got to me the most was ‘I should have just done that too instead of a proper job!’ … Errrr excuse me? Did you just imply blogging was a piece of cake? I actually chuckled to myself at the time followed by a polite ‘Thank you for helping me figure out what  I should blog about next!” … Chapter closed, dessert served, time to go home now! Phew …

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think blogging would be easy. Just like any other non-blogger, I too thought it would be as simple as logging in for a few minutes daily, typing out a few thoughts here and there and voila! I would have a popular blog overnight … The truth however was far from it …

While I still consider myself to be a newbie in this blogging business, I think these last few months have taught me quite a lot about the reality of blogging and helped me mature as a blogger. While I do enjoy every minute of it, trust me, the struggle is real mate! Although I am not even close to being an expert, here is a lighthearted take on what I have learnt since day one …

The Name Changer:
Assumption: I just need to think of one name and create an account … Oooo, this is so exciting, I am a few seconds away from creating my own blog!

Reality:  ‘Not available’ … ‘Not available’ … ‘Not available’ … ‘Not available’ … Infinite attempts later, I finally found a name that was available! *Mentally exhausted to realise I have taken my first step into the world of blogging …*

What I tell myself now: Never put all your eggs in one basket …. unless they are the chocolate kind!

The Clock is ticking:
Assumption: This is going to be so easy. I hope WordPress does not have a word count policy coz I have so much to say … I’ll probably have 10 posts up by the end of the first week …

Reality: I am about to write my first intro post … The minute I click on ‘Write’ I go completely blank … What was my name again? Deciding what the next post should be about takes days instead of minutes … Omg, time is running out, I need to publish something pronto! But wait, will people like this? Perhaps I should just stick to the popular topics out there … But then how is it my personal blog then? *Tick Tock Tick Tock*

What I tell myself now: Relaaaax! Remember it is always quality over quantity so don’t be in a mad rush to post something just for the heck of it. Never overthink about your posts and just write from the heart when you do. Don’t forget the main purpose of the blog was to get your thoughts out there so put yourself first. If you believe in it, then write about it.

A classic ‘blank moment’ captured …

The feeling is mutual:
Assumption: Just clicked on ‘publish’ … I should probably check my email settings as I don’t want my phone alert to go wild and keep me up all night as the ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ pour in …

Reality: Umm, is my phone on silent? Why haven’t I received any notifications yet? Whaaaaaat? It has been 10 minutes since I ‘published’, how could people not have liked that? What is the world coming to these days …. *And it ends up being a sleepless night anyway*

What I tell myself now: Just like it means the world to you when someone engages with your post, the feeling is mutual for all bloggers. Take equal interest in other blogs out there to become a part of the community. The ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ will happen eventually … So chin up, and hopefully the next post will get a better response … *Am still working on this one … Hope, Not Out*

Friends like Foe:
Assumption: I’m going to play it cool and never bore my friends with my blog talk …

Reality: Waaaaaaitttt! Don’t eat that just yet, I have to take a picture for my blog first!! It is their phones that go ‘ping, ping ping‘ as soon as I ‘publish’ any post as I WhatsApp them immediately and expect them to praise me non-stop in return! 😀

What I tell myself now: Nothing at all … I will continue to nag as that’s what friends are for! 😀

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been following my blog and take out time to read about my random thoughts … Your feedback and comments mean the world to me .. so keep’em coming! Time to wrap up what is probably the longest post on my blog so far … *Told you I had a lot to say! 😉*

What has your blogging experience been like so far?

Until the next post, Lets keep it Strictly Lighthearted!

  1. Ah, so familiar and I’ve been ‘at it’ since Sept 2013.
Always learning new things, always seeing a different view, and always trying to get to grips with the latest tweak by the Happiness Engineers at WP.
Enjoy writing your posts, respond to feedback and comments, and don’t get disheartened if your latest masterpiece doesn’t get the recognition you think it deserves as something else will take off when you least expect it!
    Have fun! 🙂

      1. You are most welcome. I never thought I would like blogging or have anyone show an interest in my musings. Now I love it as I’ve always enjoyed writing, and look forward to comments, posts and challenges.
I’m hoping to hit two milestones this month.
